"Scented and Blocking Fine Dust" ... Six Themed Forests Created in Ttukseom, Mangwon, and Nanji Hangang Parks
Seoul City Surpasses 1 Million Trees Planted Over 6 Years ... Equivalent to 95 Soccer Fields
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] This year marks the sixth year since Seoul City has been focusing on creating dense forests by planting a large number of trees in Hangang Park, with the number of planted trees surpassing 1 million.
Seoul City announced on the 29th that through the 'Hangang Forest Creation Project' from 2015 to 2019, a total of 930,000 trees were planted across 11 Hangang Park locations, creating new forests covering an area 95 times the size of a soccer field (677,000㎡).
With an additional 150,000 trees planned to be planted this year, the total number of planted trees will exceed 1 million.
The Hangang Forest Creation Project was initiated by Seoul City with the aim of restoring the naturalness of the Hangang River. In addition to the city-funded planting projects, tree planting is also carried out through donations from citizens.
The project is divided into three models according to the location and function of the Hangang: 'Ecological Forest' focusing on restoring the naturalness of the Hangang, 'Usage Forest' expanding shaded resting areas such as shade trees, and 'Buffer Forest' for blocking fine dust and noise.
Accordingly, at Ichon Hangang Park, a 'Bamboo Breeze Forest' themed on bamboo native to the southern region of the Korean Peninsula was created, and at Jamwon Hangang Park, a new 'Healing Forest' was established as a healing space for citizens. Along approximately 40 km from Gwangnaru to Gangseo Hangang Park, the 'Poplar Hundred-Mile Road' was also created along the Hangang riverside. Notably, about 12% of these forests were created through donations from citizens and companies, adding special significance.
This year, Seoul City is investing a total budget of 6 billion KRW to plant 150,000 trees in three Hangang Parks?Ttukseom, Nanji, and Mangwon?creating six Hangang-themed forests.
In June, a forest filled with the scent of pine and lilac flowers will be created near Seoul Ship Park in Mangwon Hangang Park, and from Jamsil to Cheonho Bridge in Ttukseom Hangang Park, pine and Mongolian oak trees will be planted to create new shaded forests for rest. At Nanji Hangang Park, adjacent to Gangbyeonbuk-ro, pine and Sorbus alnifolia will be planted in a multi-layered structure to block various noises and fine dust generated from the road.
