Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon Drives Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Car
Replacing District Mayor's Exclusive Vehicle with Hydrogen Car... In the Era of Climate Crisis, Using Eco-Friendly Vehicles Is Not an Option but a Necessity... Efforts to Expand Eco-Friendly Vehicle Infrastructure Including Gradual Replacement of Administrative Vehicles and Expansion of Private Sector Supply
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, is leading the creation of a clean Gangdong free of greenhouse gases and fine dust by replacing the official vehicle used for administrative work with an eco-friendly hydrogen vehicle.
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) invested a total of 70 million KRW in national and city funds secured for purchasing eco-friendly vehicles to acquire two hydrogen vehicles, which are currently operated as official vehicles for the mayor and vice mayor's administrative duties.
Unlike internal combustion engine vehicles, hydrogen vehicles have no engine and therefore emit no air pollutants. They also have an air purification function that reduces fine dust in the air. For this reason, they are called ‘future cars’ along with electric vehicles.
After continuous consultations with Seoul City and others since July last year, the district secured a total of 70 million KRW in national and city funds and purchased two hydrogen vehicles this year. These hydrogen vehicles are operated as official vehicles for the mayor and vice mayor, who frequently meet residents at major meetings and events, aiming to raise residents’ awareness of eco-friendly vehicles and expand their distribution to the private sector.
Furthermore, when replacing or newly purchasing administrative vehicles used by the district office and community service centers, priority will be given to electric and hydrogen vehicles, proactively expanding the eco-friendly vehicle infrastructure.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “Active efforts starting from public institutions are necessary to respond to the climate change crisis.
In particular, since 25% of ultra-fine dust emissions in the Seoul area come from the vehicle sector, using eco-friendly vehicles is not a choice but a necessity,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen infrastructure to expand the distribution of eco-friendly vehicles beyond the public sector to the private sector and actively discover and implement practical policies to improve air quality.”

In January, Gangdong-gu was the only district among Seoul’s autonomous districts to establish the ‘Green Energy Division,’ a dedicated department for energy policy. It is leading greenhouse gas reduction policies by forming public consensus through initiatives such as expanding solar mini power plants and energy self-reliant villages, operating energy centers and Energy Maru, and running eco-friendly energy tour experience classes.
