SSG.com Introduces Korea's First Eco Ice Pack Using Microorganisms
Dix and Development Since November Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] SSG.com is introducing the country's first ice pack using microorganisms as part of its efforts to establish an 'eco-friendly delivery system.'
On the 27th, SSG.com announced that starting from the 1st of next month, it will completely replace the purple gel 'water ice packs' used for dawn delivery with eco-friendly ice packs called 'Eco Ice Packs.'
The purple gel previously used by SSG.com was already considered environmentally harmless as it was made by freezing pure water without any chemicals. This time, they have gone further by injecting a photosynthetic microorganism called PSB into it, adding eco-friendly functionality. When disposing of the gel, it can be used not only for sewage purification but also as a plant nutrient.
When customers using dawn delivery need to discard the ice packs, tearing the packaging and pouring the contents into the drain can help purify wastewater in rivers and streams. Additionally, it can be used as a nutrient to promote plant growth at home.
This purple gel was inspired by eco-friendly farming methods using microorganisms. Since November last year, SSG.com and its gel manufacturing partner Dix have jointly promoted the introduction of eco-friendly ice packs, noting that various microorganisms have proven effective for a wide range of purposes such as fish farming, organic matter decomposition, water purification, and odor reduction.
Moreover, multiple verification processes were conducted to ensure that the number and activity of microorganisms remain stable even after exposure to subzero temperatures, and that the cooling power remains comparable to that of regular ice packs despite the injection of microorganisms into the gel.
An SSG.com official said, "We use about 20,000 ice packs daily through dawn delivery, and we expect that the introduction of Eco Ice Packs will further enhance consumer trust in the era of environmental responsibility. We will fulfill our social responsibility to reduce disposable products by providing sustainable eco-friendly services."

Meanwhile, last year, when SSG.com launched dawn delivery, it took proactive measures to protect the environment by introducing the 'Albi Bag,' which can be reused almost indefinitely, and by offering ice packs made solely by freezing water. Recently, it also completely discontinued issuing paper order confirmation slips provided with online orders and switched entirely to mobile confirmations starting from the 1st of this month.
