In "Time to Hunt," "Donghae" is labeled as "Sea of Japan"... Netflix says "We will correct it immediately"
[Asia Economy Reporter Shinwon Yoon] Netflix's movie "Time to Hunt," released on the 23rd, has sparked controversy as the German subtitles label the "East Sea" as the "Japanisches Meer" (Sea of Japan).
According to the cyber diplomacy group VANK on the 24th, the problematic part in "Time to Hunt" occurs around the 53-minute mark. In the scene where Junseok (Lee Je-hoon) tells a gun dealer, "We are now in the East Sea," most subtitles in English, French, and other languages display "East Sea (동해)," but the German subtitles translate it as "Japanisches Meer."
VANK immediately sent a protest letter to Netflix requesting the correction to "East Sea," along with examples from some of the world's largest textbook publishers such as Dorling Kindersley (DK), online map maker World Atlas, and one of the world's largest map publishers, National Geographic, all of which use "East Sea."
They also conveyed that the United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names (UNCSGN) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) stipulate that when a geographical feature is shared by two or more countries and no agreement on a single name is reached, the names used by each country should be listed together. Additionally, they noted that in 2017, the state of Virginia in the United States passed a bill requiring all textbooks to list both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" together.
Park Ki-tae, head of VANK, said, "Correcting the East Sea notation on Netflix, which has 180 million viewers worldwide, is very meaningful," and urged people to join the protest. Materials on the unfairness of the Sea of Japan notation and the legitimacy of promoting the East Sea can be sent to Netflix via the global East Sea promotion site (whyeastsea.prkorea.com).

Netflix stated, "'Time to Hunt' is available in 30 languages for entertainment fans worldwide. We are currently checking with each language localization team to see if there are similar cases like the German subtitles, and once this process is complete, we will immediately correct the subtitles."
