[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suwan] A medical student who was prosecuted for sexually assaulting his girlfriend and driving under the influence, and was sentenced to a suspended prison term by the court, has become the subject of a national petition demanding that he be barred from taking the national medical licensing exam.
On the 22nd, a petition titled "Medical students who commit rape, assault, and DUI should not become doctors" was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board. As of 6 p.m. that day, the petition had garnered 7,146 signatures.
The petitioner wrote, "According to media reports, A (24), a fourth-year student at a medical school in Jeonbuk, was tried on charges including rape, injury, and violation of the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling, and was sentenced to two years in prison with a three-year suspension. As a citizen, I cannot help but feel physically and mentally threatened when I think that someone who committed sexual assault receives such a light punishment and then becomes a doctor treating patients."
He continued, "These days, as light punishments for sex crimes continue, there is talk that such rulings are fostering sex offenders. The victim may have agreed, but the law’s work ends there, and now ethics must step in."
He emphasized, "In our country, it is almost impossible to permanently revoke a medical license even in cases of murder. There needs to be a measure to prevent criminals like this from becoming doctors."
Finally, he requested, "I hope the school expels this student, and even if he graduates, I ask the Ministry of Health and Welfare to prevent him from taking the national medical licensing exam or granting him a license."
Earlier, A was sentenced in January to two years in prison with a three-year suspension on charges of rape, injury, violation of the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (causing injury), and violation of the Road Traffic Act (DUI). The court also ordered A to complete 40 hours of sexual violence treatment programs and imposed a three-year employment restriction at child and youth-related institutions and welfare facilities for the disabled.
A was indicted for assaulting and sexually assaulting his girlfriend B at a one-room apartment in Jeonju on the morning of September 3, 2018.
It was revealed that A assaulted B again after she told him, "Do not contact me anymore," following the sexual assault.
Investigations confirmed that A caused an accident while driving under the influence. In May of last year, he was found to have hit a car waiting at a traffic signal while driving his own vehicle intoxicated, injuring the other driver and a passenger.
Notably, after the first trial verdict, A continued to participate in hospital internships and classes as usual.
