Jung-gu Distributes 'Visiting Memory Health Kits'
Growing Kidney Beans Set, Handicraft Activity Kit, and Cognitive Enhancement Worksheets Included
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seoyangho) has developed and produced a home dementia treatment program called the 'Visiting Memory Health Kit' for elderly people with dementia and those at high risk of dementia, and is delivering it to them.
As the closure of dementia safety centers has been prolonged due to the impact of COVID-19, the district has stepped in to minimize the care gap for elderly dementia patients.
The Memory Health Kit includes ▲ a 'Kidney Bean Growing Set' and a 'Plant Growth Diary' ▲ a 'Handicraft Activity Kit' that stimulates fine motor skills ▲ self-produced 'Cognitive Enhancement Activity Sheets' ▲ dementia prevention foods such as nuts and canned tuna. The kit's contents were customized with expert advice according to the diagnosis type of the recipient (normal group, high-risk group, dementia group).
The 'Visiting Memory Health Kit,' distributed for the second time following March, will be delivered to 141 homes of elderly dementia patients through the Jung-gu Dementia Safety Center over ten days starting from the 20th. To minimize face-to-face contact, the kits will be left at the door at the scheduled time in a non-contact delivery method.
Ms. Jung (female, 76), who participated in the first phase of the Visiting Memory Health Kit project, said, "I felt frustrated staying at home for several months, but since receiving the kit, I have been so engaged that I lose track of time." She added, "If I encounter something I don't understand while studying, the center staff kindly explains it over the phone, so I don't find it difficult to study at home."
A district official stated that the Visiting Memory Health Kit will be regularly produced and delivered while the dementia safety center remains closed.
The district, together with the dementia safety center, is providing various supports for elderly dementia patients who are isolated from outside activities. They have strengthened home visit medical services by neurologists and nurses, and also provide telephone health consultations and care supplies such as diapers and waterproof mats.
