Im Kyung, KOICA Chairperson, Joins Seongnam City in 'Flower Bucket Challenge' to Overcome COVID-19
Participation in Flower Basket Relay to Support Floriculture Farms Facing Economic Hardships Due to COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA Chairperson Lee Mi-kyung participated in the "Flower Bucket Challenge" on the 22nd to support local flower farmers affected by the economic downturn caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). She presented a bouquet to Eun Su-mi, Mayor of Seongnam City, at the Seongnam City Hall building.
The Flower Bucket Challenge was initiated to help Korean flower farmers struggling with sales due to the cancellation of various events amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a relay-style campaign where the recipient of a flower basket nominates the next person to pass on the flower basket.
Earlier, on March 31, KOICA Chairperson Lee Mi-kyung was nominated by Han Woo-sung, Chairman of the Overseas Koreans Foundation, and personally received a flower basket at the KOICA headquarters in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. She then nominated three successors: Lee Seung-yeol, President of Arirang International Broadcasting, Bang Moon-kyu, President of the Export-Import Bank of Korea, and Eun Su-mi, Mayor of Seongnam. On April 16 and 21, bouquets and messages of overcoming COVID-19 were delivered to Arirang International Broadcasting and the Export-Import Bank of Korea.
Along with participating in the Flower Bucket Challenge, Chairperson Lee also gifted bouquets to KOICA employees to encourage staff facing various difficulties due to COVID-19 and urged support for neighbors, including flower farmers, who are in challenging situations.
Chairperson Lee said, "I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this meaningful campaign and hope it helps flower farmers. I ask those nominated to select the next participants and spread messages of support to overcome COVID-19."
Meanwhile, KOICA is collaborating with Seongnam City to overcome COVID-19 in the community by opening KOICA training center facilities for Seongnam citizens and overseas Koreans who find self-quarantine difficult.
