"Sexual Exploitation Material Buyers Exposed"... Victims of 'Nth Room Doxxing' Continue to Emerge
'Accused as Perpetrator in an Instant Due to False Reports on "n번방 Exposure Account"'
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] #University student A was recently shocked by a sudden phone call from an acquaintance. The acquaintance abruptly asked A, "Are you involved in the Telegram Nth Room case?" When A asked what that meant, the acquaintance said, "You received a message from an unknown person claiming that you are an Nth Room perpetrator."
Immediately checking social networking services (SNS) such as Twitter, A was horrified. Posts and photos claiming that A was a perpetrator in the Nth Room case were being shared in real time. Although A had never used Telegram, it was already accepted as fact that he was a perpetrator. The mental shock was so severe that A could not go out for a while, and eventually reported the matter to the police.
#B also suffered damage due to wrongful personal information disclosure. Someone maliciously submitted false reports to exposure accounts revealing the identities of those involved in the Nth Room case. B learned through acquaintances that his personal information was circulating on SNS and even posted a clarification, but no one believed him. B said, "Most of my relationships have been severed because of this," and added, "I filed a complaint with the police, but my personal information is still circulating on the internet."
As the identities of those accused as perpetrators in the Nth Room case spread through SNS and various communities, cases of unjust harm are also increasing.
Even if the disclosed personal information is indeed that of actual Nth Room-related individuals, such acts themselves constitute illegal activities such as defamation. Under current law, the disclosure of a specific person's identity is only permitted when investigative agencies such as the police or prosecution decide through institutional procedures. Individuals cannot disclose others' personal information for the purpose of social punishment.
So far, only two suspects whose identities have been publicly disclosed through proper legal procedures related to the Nth Room case are Jo Joo-bin (24, detained and indicted), who operated the "Doctor's Room," and his accomplice Kang Hoon (18, detained).
