Joseon White Moon Jar Permanently Exported to Australia
"Promoting Korean Traditional Culture Enhances Its Value"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] Following the traditional folding screen paintings 'Chaekgado (冊架圖)' and 'Yeonhwado (蓮花圖)', a Joseon moon jar will also be permanently exported to Australia. On the 22nd, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it had approved the permanent export of a piece of Joseon white porcelain purchased domestically by the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia for exhibition purposes.
This jar is made of white porcelain. Its white and round shape evokes the full moon. It is estimated to have been made in the late 18th century. Its size is 34 cm in height and 35 cm in width. Compared to similar artifacts designated as national or provincial cultural properties, it is smaller. The Cultural Heritage Administration explained, "Moon jars were widely produced in the 18th century, and a considerable number exist domestically. We judged that its value would increase by promoting Korean traditional culture through overseas exhibitions, and after review by the Cultural Heritage Committee, we exceptionally allowed its export abroad."

The National Gallery of Victoria also permanently acquired the 'Chaekgado' and 'Yeonhwado', believed to have been created in the early 20th century, in June last year. This was the first case of Korean cultural heritage being legally exported abroad through official channels. The National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and largest art museum in Australia. It is known to actively collect artifacts to expand its Korean art section.
