Cheongnyangni General Market Rain and Sunshade Installation Construction Begins
Dongdaemun-gu Breaks Ground for Installation in Cheongnyangni General Market (Section 2)... Total Investment of 1.752 Billion KRW
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) is investing a total project cost of 1.752 billion KRW to install rain and sun shades in Cheongnyangni General Market (Section 2, around 38 Gosan-ro, Dongdaemun-gu) to revitalize the traditional market district in the Cheongnyangni area and strengthen its competitiveness.
This project was selected as part of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' '2019 Traditional Market and Shopping District Support and Promotion Project.' However, construction was delayed due to the relocation and undergrounding of high-voltage poles in the project area. After completing consultations with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) earlier this year, demolition work began on April 11.
Cheongnyangni General Market (Section 2) consists of about 60 wholesale and retail stores, including agricultural and marine product vendors, mills, and restaurants, forming a commercial district.
This area is especially known for its high-quality and competitively priced products, and it attracts many visitors due to its well-known eateries.
However, the facilities are aging, and temporary structures occupy the roads, reducing the market's competitiveness. The market has also been pointed out for safety issues such as fire hazards.
The district office plans to install rain and sun shades within the market and replace the previously inconsistent store signs with fresh and unified designs through this project.
Additionally, outdated water pipelines and electrical, fire safety, and communication facilities exposed to accident risks will be neatly and safely refurbished.
Last September, the district installed canopies along Cheongnyangni General Market (from 159-1 Wangsanno to 19-1 Gyeongdong Market-ro, both directions) and installed evaporative cooling devices in two arcade sections of Cheongnyangni Fruit and Vegetable Market (6 Wangsanno 33-gil). In November last year, power supply work for security lights was completed within the arcade section of Cheongnyangni Agricultural and Marine Products Market.
