Snowden in Exile Applies to Extend Local Residency Permit in Russia
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Edward Snowden, a former US intelligence officer currently in exile, is reported to have submitted an application to extend his residency permit in Russia.
On the 16th (local time), Russian media cited Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, reporting that Snowden recently submitted an application to the relevant authorities requesting a 3-year extension of his Russian residency permit.
Kucherena stated, "The residency permit expires in April," adding, "We hope for a positive decision."
Snowden disclosed the indiscriminate personal data collection practices of the US National Security Agency (NSA) in June 2013 and fled to Hong Kong before being granted a one-year temporary asylum by Russia.

After the temporary asylum period ended in August 2014, Snowden obtained a 3-year residency permit from Russian immigration authorities, and in early 2017, he extended it again for another 3 years until August 2020, currently living in Moscow.
