'The Old Man Reading a Love Novel' Sep?lveda Dies from COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Luis Sep?lveda (photo), a world-renowned writer born in Chile, died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Spain after being infected with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). He was 70 years old.
According to AFP and other sources, Tusquets Publishing in Barcelona, which has published Sep?lveda's works, released a statement on the 16th (local time) announcing that Sep?lveda passed away at a hospital in Oviedo, northern Spain.
Sep?lveda battled the disease for six weeks after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
Born in Chile, Sep?lveda settled in Spain and carried out his literary activities there. He is regarded as a first-class writer widely recognized for both popular appeal and literary quality in the Spanish-speaking world.
His representative work includes the global bestseller The Old Man Who Read Love Stories. This novel, which was his first, is a tribute to Chico Mendes, an environmental activist who was murdered in 1989.
