Lee Jae-myung "Sewol Ferry 6th Anniversary, Regrettable That Nothing Has Been Resolved"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, expressed his regret on the 6th anniversary of the "Sewol Ferry Disaster" on the 16th, saying that although time has passed, nothing has been resolved.
On that day, Lee posted on Facebook an article titled "Welcoming Spring Again, Yet We Have Moved Forward," expressing his sorrow over the Sewol Ferry Disaster six years ago, saying, "Spring has come again, a spring that my body remembers first and my heart aches."
He added, "We are living each day pushed by physical time, but for some, time has stopped on April 16, 2014," and lamented, "Spring has come again mercilessly, and although six years have passed, nothing has been resolved, which is even more regrettable and frustrating."
In particular, he pointed out, "We still cannot clearly understand why the state, which should protect the lives of its people, stood by idly, and why so many lost their lives," and criticized, "Even the common-sense demand to uncover the cause of the disaster and punish those responsible has not yet been properly realized."
Furthermore, he added, "Time flows mercilessly, and I sincerely apologize to the bereaved families who may be frustrated in front of the high wall of slow reality."
However, he said, "We have not simply wasted the past time," and evaluated, "We are witnessing the (Moon Jae-in) government's efforts to protect the lives of the people amid the global COVID-19 crisis, and the state, which was nowhere to be seen six years ago, is now protecting each and every citizen, so we have moved forward."
