Dongwon F&B Launches 100% Plant-Based Alternative Meats 'Beyond Beef' and 'Beyond Sausage'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Dongwon F&B announced on the 16th that it is launching two new products from the plant-based meat brand Beyond Meat (Beyond Beef, Beyond Sausage) and strengthening its competitiveness as a leading company in the domestic vegan food market.
Dongwon F&B signed an exclusive supply contract with Beyond Meat, a U.S. company that manufactures plant-based meat, in December 2018 and has been leading the domestic vegan food market since last year by introducing the plant-based meat patty 'Beyond Burger.' The Beyond Burger, launched in 2016, has sold over 25 million packs worldwide, and with Dongwon F&B's exclusive import and distribution, about 82,000 patties have been sold domestically. The Beyond Burger is currently distributed through department stores, large supermarkets, and vegan restaurants.
Beyond Meat products are 100% plant-based meat alternatives made from proteins extracted from soybeans, mushrooms, pumpkins, and other sources. They have high protein content while being low in fat and saturated fatty acids, and contain no environmental hormones or antibiotics, making them popular among consumers who avoid meat for health or other reasons.
Responding to the strong interest and positive response from the domestic vegetarian population, Dongwon F&B expanded Beyond Meat’s brand lineup by additionally launching 'Beyond Beef' and 'Beyond Sausage.' Beyond Beef and Beyond Sausage are finely ground beef and pork sausage forms, respectively, replicating not only taste and texture but also meat juice. Beyond Meat products can be used in meatballs, tacos, pasta, and Beyond Sausage can be eaten in hot dogs or as ingredients in various dishes just like regular sausages.
Recently, with growing interest in health and the environment, the vegan food market size and vegan population have been steadily increasing. According to global consulting firm Grand View Research, the global vegan market size has grown at an average annual rate of 9.6% since 2018 and is expected to reach $24.06 billion (approximately 29.717 trillion KRW) by 2025. According to the Korea Vegetarian Union, the domestic vegetarian population ranges from 1 million to 1.5 million, with 500,000 being strict vegetarians.
A Dongwon F&B official said, “Among millennials who focus on ‘right consumption,’ there is a change in perception accepting veganism as a dietary preference,” adding, “Dongwon F&B will continue to pay attention to the plant-based meat market and strive to provide necessary products to various consumers who want value consumption.”
