Samsung Heavy Industries Secures Order for Two Ultra-Large LNG Fuel-Powered Crude Oil Carriers
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Soyeon] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 14th that it has secured an order worth a total of 253.6 billion KRW for two LNG-fueled ultra-large crude carriers (VLCC) from a Bermuda-based shipping company. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by April 2022.
The LNG-fueled VLCCs are equipped with Samsung Heavy Industries' independently developed LNG fuel supply system, 'S-Fugas,' which reduces sulfur oxides in exhaust gases by 99%, nitrogen oxides by 85%, and carbon dioxide by 25% compared to conventional diesel fuel use. Accordingly, they can effectively comply with the sulfur content limit regulation for marine fuels (IMO 2020) that has been enforced since this year.
In addition, various energy-saving devices (ESD) that improve fuel efficiency by controlling seawater flow during navigation and the smart ship solution 'SVESSEL,' which automatically establishes optimal voyage plans to reduce fuel consumption, will be applied. These are representative eco-friendly smart ship technologies of Samsung Heavy Industries.
A Samsung Heavy Industries official stated, "LNG-fueled crude carriers have mainly been applied to medium-sized vessels of around 100,000 tons, but this order will be a turning point expanding to ultra-large crude carriers." He emphasized, "Since we have secured a leading position in the eco-friendly VLCC market, we will strive to maximize orders."
