Discovery of Major COVID-19 Mutation... Vaccine Development May Become More Difficult
Australian and Taiwanese Researchers Identify Significant Mutation in Spike Protein of Indian Patients
Vaccine Success Depends on Whether Spike Protein Is Neutralized
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Young-shin] Researchers from Australia and Taiwan have discovered a major mutation of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the 14th. This is the first time a major mutation has been found, and SCMP stated that it could pose an obstacle to vaccine development.
According to the research results, changes occurred in a part of the spike protein (a protein protruding like spikes on the virus surface) that can bind to human cells. The COVID-19 virus invades host cells by binding to receptors on human cells through the spike protein. After binding to the receptor, the cell membrane and virus membrane fuse, allowing the viral genes to enter the cell. Neutralizing the spike protein is essential to prevent human infection. Vaccine development also focuses on neutralizing the spike protein.
SCMP reported that the major mutation in the spike protein could make COVID-19 vaccine development more difficult. The researchers confirmed the major mutation in samples from a COVID-19 patient who returned to India from Wuhan, China. They concluded that the discovered variant is unrelated to any variants identified in China or other countries.
SCMP also reported that the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing is closely monitoring variants entering from India. Clinical phases 2 and 3 of vaccines are already underway, and the final results of the major mutation could affect the vaccines.

However, SCMP added that further verification of the spike protein causing the mutation is necessary to determine whether this major mutation resulted from a technical error.
