Promotion of Establishing the Army Artificial Intelligence Research Institute
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] The Army is pushing to establish a research institute for research and development (R&D) of 4th industrial revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and drones.
On the 14th, an Army official said, "At the beginning of last month, a bid announcement was made through the Public Procurement Service for a research project on the establishment plan of a technology research institute, and we expect to receive the research results by November."
Through this policy research, the Army plans to verify the operation cases of overseas army research institutes and the effectiveness and feasibility of the technology research institute. The U.S. Army already operates an army research institute separately from other branches. Specifically, it will review the operation status of government-managed technology research institutes and the operation status of defense research and development. Subsequently, it plans to prepare related legislation and operational plans for the establishment of the Army Technology Research Institute.
The Army argues that in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, it is necessary to establish a research institute to quickly and effectively acquire the technologies required by the Army. In fact, in 2018, the Army reorganized the existing Army Ground Warfare Research Institute and launched the Army Future Innovation Research Center to design the Army's future blueprint. It appears that the establishment of the research institute is being promoted as the Army Future Innovation Research Center judged that technology research and development were necessary in the process of establishing mid- to long-term power enhancement and improvement plans.
The Army has officially announced the development of the "Top 10 Next-Generation Game Changers" and is actively introducing 4th Industrial Revolution technologies. The next-generation game changers include laser and ultra-long-range weapons, manned-unmanned combined combat systems, stealth and high mobility of ground weapons, quantum technology, biomimetic robots, cyber and electronic warfare, AI, and next-generation warrior platforms.

In December last year, the Army also opened the "Future Army Science and Technology Research Institute" under the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The Future Army Science and Technology Research Institute researches the development of future ground operation basic concepts and the science and technology necessary to create power demands. It is reported that the Army plans to secure its own technological capabilities not only through collaboration with external institutions but also by establishing an internal military technology research institute.
