Russia Reports 2,500 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Exceeds 18,000
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] The number of new daily confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Russia surpassed 2,500 on the 13th (local time). The cumulative number of confirmed cases also exceeded 18,000.
According to foreign media including TASS News Agency, the Russian government's COVID-19 Import and Spread Prevention Headquarters announced that "an additional 2,558 confirmed cases were reported across 62 regions, including Moscow, within one day." The total cumulative confirmed cases increased to 18,328.
In the capital Moscow alone, 1,355 new confirmed cases were added. The cumulative confirmed cases rose to 11,513. In the Moscow Oblast surrounding Moscow, 495 new confirmed cases were reported, and 121 additional cases were confirmed in Saint Petersburg. The cumulative confirmed cases in these areas increased to 1,855 and 678, respectively.
The number of deaths due to COVID-19 also increased by 18 in one day, bringing the total to 148. The headquarters reported that 1,470 of the confirmed cases have recovered, and the total number of tests conducted reached 1.3 million.
The rapid increase in confirmed cases in Russia appears to be due to a significant rise in the number of daily tests conducted. Secondary transmission through infections imported from abroad was also identified as a cause. As health authorities continue to expand testing facilities, the daily number of tests has reached around 100,000.
