Green Light for Job Creation of 'Jongno-type Jobs' Amid COVID-19 Crisis
Recruitment of Public Jobs for COVID-19 Response Targeting Residents... Final Selection Through Document Review and Interview... Second Public Work Project Participants Recruitment... Special Funding Secured Through Request to Seoul City
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] As the COVID-19 pandemic prolongs, causing growing public anxiety and economic contraction, Jongno-gu has launched a public job project related to COVID-19 response to directly tackle the employment market crisis.
Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) has set ‘job stability’ as its policy direction and core project to assist the unemployed, small business owners, and workers in affected industries who are suffering economic difficulties due to COVID-19.
After brainstorming job creation plans, the district office decided to implement projects including the ‘COVID-19 Response Public Work Project,’ ‘Jongno-type Public Job Project,’ ‘Screening Clinic Support,’ and ‘Emergency Disaster Living Expense Support.’
First, the district is recruiting public jobs related to COVID-19 response for Jongno-gu residents aged 18 and older who are capable of working. The recruitment projects include ▲Senior health (massage) management ▲Park and green space projects (trail repair and painting, street green area watering management, etc.) ▲Fever checks and civil service guidance for visitors to the district office ▲Disinfection and cleaning support at the district office ▲Emergency transportation driving support for overseas arrivals ▲Promotion of Jongno Love Gift Certificates.
Final selection will be made through document screening, interviews, or practical tests. For more details, please check the district office website or contact the General Affairs Division.
Next, the district will implement a second public work project for COVID-19 response. To stabilize employment for residents, the district requested special support from Seoul City and received project funding to proceed.
The public work target is Jongno-gu residents aged 18 and older, and those who have lost jobs while working at local companies are also eligible to apply.
The total number of recruits is 170, and applicants should bring their ID and visit the Job Economy Division at the district office or their local community service center by April 20.
Applicants can choose from fields such as ▲Park and green space maintenance ▲COVID-19 administrative support ▲Public restroom environment improvement ▲Support for abandoned waste disposal ▲Sangchonjae operation support ▲Environmental maintenance in the Bukchon area.
The wage is 52,000 KRW per day for 6 hours of work based on general project standards, and a snack allowance of 5,000 KRW per day is also paid only on working days. For related inquiries, please contact the Job Economy Division.
Earlier this year, the district also recruited about 100 workers for the first public work project to handle local quarantine and promote Jongno Love Gift Certificates.
In March, Jongno-gu hired doctors, nurses, and administrative support staff to work at local screening clinics related to COVID-19 and is striving to prevent the spread of community infection.
Also in the same month, the district conducted an open recruitment of 38 temporary workers to carry out ‘Emergency Disaster Living Expense Support’ for households with income below 100% of the median income facing livelihood crises due to COVID-19.
The final successful candidates have been assigned to the district office and each community service center until May 29, performing tasks such as receiving emergency living expense applications, telephone counseling, beneficiary information inquiry, and dedicated visits for ‘on-site application.’

Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “To prepare COVID-19 countermeasures, Jongno-gu has focused first on quarantine and second on employment stability, creating as many public jobs as possible within the district’s capacity. Jongno-gu is conducting intensive quarantine in places with heavy foot traffic and multi-use facilities, actively promoting preventive measures such as wearing masks and hand washing. We will do our utmost until the day the confusion caused by COVID-19 ends so that all residents can live in a healthy and safe environment.”
