Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee "Wants to Hold Olympics This Year at Same Schedule and Venue"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee, which postponed the Olympic Games due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), has expressed a desire to hold the event at the same time and place as this year.
According to the Asahi Shimbun on the 11th, Tokyo Organizing Committee Secretary General Mut? Toshir? said this during an online press conference held the previous day.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee will discuss the schedule and venue of the Games with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through a video conference on the 16th. Originally, the Tokyo Olympics were scheduled to be held from July 24 to August 9 this year. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the event was postponed to July 23 to August 8 next year. The opening and closing dates have been moved up by one day, almost the same schedule as this year.
Based on the results of this meeting, the Tokyo Organizing Committee is expected to soon begin negotiations for venue use during the Olympic period with major stadiums. This year, the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics were planned to be held at 43 venues across 9 metropolitan governments, including the Tokyo International Forum.
Meanwhile, due to the suspension of the Tokyo Olympic torch relay caused by COVID-19, IOC President Thomas Bach's visit to Japan in May was canceled.
