[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Eunhee Jo) is strengthening various support measures for parents and children struggling with home care due to the indefinite extension of daycare center closures caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, as well as for childcare staff providing emergency care.
First, to take care of the health of children whose outdoor activities have decreased due to COVID-19, a weekly dairy product delivery service will be implemented in partnership with Korea Yakult.
For a total of 8,670 infants and toddlers, including about 7,000 children enrolled in daycare centers and about 1,670 children enrolled in private kindergartens, daycare centers will receive a 100% increase compared to last year (based on the toddler class), and kindergartens will receive an additional one-month eco-friendly meal fee on top of the April payment. This is part of Seocho-gu’s specialized eco-friendly meal fee support project, which provides 10,000 KRW per child per month.
Once a week, the dairy happiness delivery service will deliver 2 to 3 items such as antibiotic-free certified milk, organic vegetable and fruit juice, and squeezable yogurt directly to homes, over a total of four deliveries.
Entertainment will also be delivered. To welcome spring, ‘flowerpot kits’ that parents and children can grow at home will be delivered to 618 infants and toddlers from families participating in the ‘Together Growing Co-parenting’ program.
In March, activity kits such as bowling play, paint play, and decorating one’s own eco bag were provided. In April, to celebrate Arbor Day and to promote mutual growth with flower farmers as well as to help revitalize the local economy, flowerpot kits will be delivered to each household.
For children enrolled in private kindergartens, unique ‘Stay-at-Home Play Videos’ are provided by each kindergarten. Kindergarten teachers appear in person, offering a total of 139 videos featuring various home activities and exercise programs.
Additionally, the ‘Seoripul Akdong (樂童) Cultural Performance,’ which has been piloted since 2018 and was well received by parents and children with over 11,500 viewers in 28 performances, will be broadcast as the ‘Banggu-seok Concert’ (Living Room Concert).
Due to COVID-19, performances scheduled for the first half of this year were canceled, disappointing many parents and children. The Akdong performances will be broadcast three times on Fridays in April (10th, 17th, 24th) from 4 PM via Seocho HCN broadcasting.
For households unable to watch HCN, the performances can also be easily viewed through the Seocho-gu Office YouTube channel.
On the 10th, the play ‘Grandma Patjuk and the Tiger,’ on the 17th, ‘Peter Rabbit’ (a fairy tale play), and on the 24th, ‘The Bremen Town Musicians’ (a fairy tale play), all familiar and famous performances based on well-known fairy tales, will fill the screen.
For parents growing weary from prolonged home care, illustrator Jaewon Shim, famous for the ‘Finnish Parenting Method,’ will provide the heartwarming ‘Mom Todak Todak Webtoon.’
Starting on the 10th, the district will post special cheering messages for Seocho-gu mothers who are overcoming COVID-19 on the Seocho-gu Office Instagram, blog, and Seocho-gu Childcare Support Center website to evoke empathy among parents. Shim Jaewon’s COVID-19 overcoming encouragement messages will be posted five times every Friday, each with a different theme.
