Samsung and LG Laptops Benefit from 'Online School Opening Boom'
Despite the End of Peak Season, Sales Increased by 10-20% Due to Online School Openings and Increased Remote Work
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), online school openings have begun and companies' remote work has increased, leading to a significant rise in laptop sales for Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Despite April being past the peak season, laptop sales are estimated to have increased by about 20% compared to the previous year.
According to the electronics distribution industry on the 10th, sales of portable PC products such as laptops and tablet PCs from Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics at offline electronics stores last month increased by about 10-20% compared to the same period last year.
The strong sales of laptops are analyzed to be due to the surge in demand for remote work, video conferencing, and remote education caused by COVID-19. In particular, with elementary, middle, and high schools starting online classes in April, demand for related products further increased. Laptop sales reportedly increased by more than 20% compared to the previous year as the upward trend continued this month.
Consumer interest in laptops has also surged. According to a big data survey conducted by the Global Big Data Research Institute on portals, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and others, the volume of keyword information related to Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics laptops increased by more than 100% compared to the previous year. A representative from the institute explained, "In addition to the online school openings in April, recent remote work, video conferencing, untact recruitment, and online lectures for university students have influenced the level of interest."
As demand increased, factories that had once halted operations due to COVID-19 are now running busily. The operating rates of Chinese factories producing laptops for Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have fully recovered to pre-COVID-19 levels. These Chinese factories had stopped operations in February due to COVID-19, causing difficulties in domestic laptop supply.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics also extended their existing laptop promotions until the end of April. Usually, laptop promotions end by the end of March, but this year the period was extended to suit the situation. Samsung Electronics extended the 'Galaxy Academy' event, which was scheduled to end last month, until the end of this month.
Customers who purchase laptops are provided with free access to over 320 educational contents, including English conversation, foreign languages, and certification courses. LG Electronics also offers useful gifts for online courses or remote work to customers who purchase laptops until the end of this month. Depending on the purchased product, customers can receive an Office Value Pack consisting of office programs, paid fonts, photo editing programs, as well as wireless mice, headsets, and laptop pouches.

An electronics industry official said, "Laptops usually sell the most in February, the graduation season, and demand typically decreases from March to April, but this year the situation was reversed. Laptop sales sharply declined in February due to the mass cancellation of graduation ceremonies caused by COVID-19, but the situation turned around in March and April due to remote work and online classes."
