[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The decision on whether to detain two middle school students accused of gang-raping a female middle school student in Incheon, a case brought to public attention after the victim's mother filed a petition on the Blue House National Petition Board, will be made on the 9th.
The Incheon District Court is currently conducting a pre-trial detention hearing (warrant review) for two middle school students, including A (15), who have been issued arrest warrants on charges of rape and injury under the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
To attend the warrant review, A and the other student entered the court around 1:55 p.m. wearing masks and hats that covered most of their faces.
They did not respond to reporters' questions such as "Do you admit to the charges?" or "Do you have anything to say to the victim?" The decision on detention is expected to be made later that afternoon.
A and the other student are accused of giving alcohol to B, a female student from the same middle school, in the early morning hours of December 23 last year at a gym in an apartment complex in Incheon, then dragging her to the stairs near the rooftop where they sexually assaulted and injured her.
The police conducted an investigation for nearly three months after receiving a report from the victim's side. After the victim's mother posted a plea on the National Petition Board on the 29th of last month, the police conducted a second round of questioning of the suspects starting the following day.
The police questioned A, the other student, and B in the presence of their respective parents and collected DNA samples from A and the others for testing. However, it is reported that A and the other student denied the sexual assault charges during the police investigation.
The school held a School Violence Countermeasures Committee meeting on January 3 this year and imposed a three-day suspension and forced transfer on A and the other student. They have since transferred to two different middle schools in the Incheon area and were under police investigation while attending those schools. The police applied for arrest warrants for A and the others on the 7th.
Meanwhile, as of this day, 320,000 people have agreed with the post written by B's mother on the National Petition Board.
B's mother claimed, "The perpetrators gave my daughter alcohol in their apartment, saying 'Today, we will kill you,'" and "They hit her face, played rock-paper-scissors to decide the order, and then raped her."
She added, "As a result of this incident, my daughter was diagnosed with a three-week recovery period at the orthopedic clinic and a two-week recovery period at the obstetrics and gynecology clinic," and appealed, "The perpetrators are sex offenders who committed the serious crime of special rape causing injury and must be severely punished with at least 10 years or life imprisonment."

B's mother also argued, "The minors who committed serious crimes are receiving juvenile protection measures simply because they are young," and "The juvenile protection system, which protects vicious criminals instead of victims, must be thoroughly reformed."
