Lee Jae-myung's S.O.S to Gyeonggi Residents: "What Should We Do About Churches Disrupting Quarantine?"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, sought the opinions of 13 million Gyeonggi residents regarding churches that obstruct quarantine measures.
On the 8th, through a post titled "Churches obstructing quarantine... What should we do?" on Facebook, Governor Lee expressed gratitude for the cooperation of churches, stating, "Currently, 99.9% of churches in Gyeonggi Province have switched to online services to prevent group infections or, even when holding in-person services, are strictly following quarantine rules such as temperature checks, wearing masks, and maintaining social distancing."
However, he noted, "A church in Yongin repeatedly violates the rules and obstructs the investigation by officials who conducted on-site inspections under administrative orders," adding, "There are opinions that the church, which refused and obstructed lawful provincial quarantine measures, should be subject to an administrative order banning gatherings and criminal prosecution for strict punishment, while others argue that religious freedom must be guaranteed and that voluntary compliance rather than coercive measures should be entrusted."
