Gangbuk Residents Receive Compensation for Bicycle Accidents
Gangbuk-gu Enrolls All Residents in Bicycle Insurance...Coverage Includes Injury Diagnosis and Hospitalization Over 4 Weeks, Death, and Permanent Disability
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Gyeom-su) has enrolled all residents in bicycle insurance to prepare for safety accidents involving bicycle users and to promote bicycle use.
The project started in 2018 and has continued through this year. All residents registered in Gangbuk-gu are automatically enrolled in the insurance without any separate procedures. The coverage period is from April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2021, and residents who moved in during this period are also included.
The insurance applies not only when riding a bicycle but also when riding as a passenger or when a pedestrian collides with a bicycle. Additionally, benefits can be received anywhere nationwide in case of an accident.
The coverage includes ▲300,000 KRW for death ▲300,000 KRW for permanent disability ▲100,000 to 500,000 KRW for injuries requiring more than 4 weeks of treatment ▲100,000 KRW for hospitalization consolation money (diagnosis over 4 weeks, hospitalization over 7 days) ▲up to 20 million KRW for bicycle accident fines ▲up to 2 million KRW for attorney fees ▲up to 30 million KRW for accident handling support funds. However, those under 15 years old are excluded from death benefits, and those under 14 years old are excluded from fine and attorney fee support.
Insurance claims can be filed within 3 years from the date of the accident, and benefits can be received in addition to other personal insurance policies. After an accident, claim forms and medical certificates should be submitted to the insurance company to receive the benefits.
A district official stated, “Above all, preventing bicycle safety accidents is the priority, but if unavoidable accidents cause damage, we hope residents carefully check the coverage details and receive insurance benefits.”
