Global COVID-19 Cases Near 1 Million... Surpass 930,000 (Update)

The global number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is approaching 1 million.
According to Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., as of the afternoon of the 2nd, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide is 937,567. Among them, the number of confirmed cases in the United States is counted at 216,515.
The number of infected people in the U.S. is nearly double that of Italy (110,574), which has the highest number of patients in Europe, accounting for more than one-fifth of the global infections. The cumulative death toll also exceeded 5,000, reaching 5,137.
Italy's confirmed cases increased by 4,782 from the previous day to 110,574. For three consecutive days, the number of new confirmed cases has been in the 4,000 range.
Spain also recorded 104,118 cases, an increase of 8,195 on the day, showing an increase of around 8,000 for three consecutive days. The daily death toll reached 864, the highest since the counting began.
Although confirmed cases and deaths continue to pour out daily, cautious speculation has emerged in Italy and Spain that the peak may have passed.
Germany recorded 77,981 cases, France 57,763, and the United Kingdom 29,865, showing an increase of 3,000 to 4,000 compared to the previous day.
In Latin America, where the outbreak started late, confirmed cases have exceeded 20,000, doubling in five days.
Brazil, which has the highest number of patients in Latin America, reported more than 1,000 new confirmed cases for two consecutive days, reaching 6,931.
Chile (3,031), Ecuador (2,758), Mexico (1,378), and Peru (1,323) followed.
Asia, which has entered a calming phase, is focusing on 'reverse inflow' patients.
Korea, China, Taiwan, and others have implemented strong border controls as new confirmed cases surged among overseas nationals returning in large numbers from Europe and the U.S., where the virus spread in earnest.
China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and others have completely blocked foreign entry, while Japan initially quarantined overseas arrivals but later blocked foreign entries from most European regions.

However, in Japan, signs of re-spreading infections among the youth have raised alarms for authorities. On this day, Japan added 266 new confirmed cases, the highest number in a single day, bringing the total to 3,207.
