Gwangju City Implements Intensive Disinfection Across the Entire City to Prevent COVID-19 Spread
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Lee Yong-seop) announced on the 1st that it conducted intensive disinfection throughout the city to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the local community.
This mass disinfection was promoted as part of the short-term, high-intensity social distancing measures implemented since the 22nd of last month.
In particular, it was focused on 3,717 multi-use facilities such as bus terminals, subway stations, traditional markets, and welfare facilities, which are frequently used by citizens, based on the judgment that disinfecting the entire city at once is more effective in preventing COVID-19 than sporadic disinfection.
The disinfection involved about 8,000 participants, including officials and citizens from 433 organizations and groups such as Gwangju City, five autonomous districts, 95 neighborhood community centers, residents' autonomy committees, voluntary disaster prevention teams, neighborhood leaders' councils, Saemaul associations, Barugesalgi councils, city and district volunteer centers, and affiliated public institutions.
By district, Dong-gu covered 809 locations including traditional markets such as Namgwangju Market, Daein Market, Sansu Market, commercial areas like Chungjang-ro and Geumnam-ro, Dongmyeong Church, and the Central Library.
Seo-gu disinfected 281 locations including subway stations like Nongsung Square, Seo-gu Cultural Center, and Yangdong Market, while Nam-gu covered 1,176 locations including Bongseon Market, Mudeung Market, social welfare facilities, churches, and bus stops.
Buk-gu conducted mass disinfection at 894 locations including Malbau Market, Unam Market, Gwangju Station, Jangdeung-dong bus turnaround points, multi-use facilities, and religious facilities. Gwangsan-gu disinfected 557 locations including Songjeong Market, Honam University, and commercial areas in the Cheomdan district.
Major roads with heavy foot traffic were disinfected using vehicles, and citizens and volunteers wore masks and sanitary gloves while distributing disinfectants using portable sprayers and cloths.
Facilities frequently touched by citizens were also cleaned.
Park Hyang, Director of the City Autonomy Administration Bureau, said, “Along with mass disinfection, we are promoting a high-intensity social distancing campaign to prevent COVID-19. We hope citizens actively participate so that the united strength of the Gwangju community can overcome COVID-19.”
