Seoul National University Joint Meeting: "The Fundamental Cause of Telegram n-Bang is a Sexist Social Structure"
"Institutional Measures Needed to Eliminate Misogyny and Sexism"... Urging Political Circles to Prepare Countermeasures
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The Joint Meeting of College Student Council Presidents at Seoul National University (hereinafter referred to as the Joint Meeting), which is equivalent to the university's general student council, has urged the political sphere to devise countermeasures regarding the Telegram Nth Room incident.
On the 1st at 2 p.m., the Joint Meeting held a press conference in front of the Seoul National University Administration Building, stating, "If we do not break down the widespread misogyny and gender-discriminatory structures in society, we cannot prevent a second or third Nth Room incident." They asserted, "(The Nth Room incident) is highly problematic in that cruel and shocking human rights violations have been carried out with the tacit consent of the users, and what made this possible is the pervasive misogyny and gender-discriminatory social structure in our society."
They continued, "It is impossible to solve this problem without structural change and cultural transformation," adding, "A resolute declaration at the national level to dismantle gender-discriminatory social structures is necessary."
Furthermore, they mentioned cases of gender discrimination and human rights violations within Seoul National University, such as allegations of sexual harassment by Professor A of the Department of Spanish Language and Literature and the sexual harassment incident in the College of Humanities group chat room, stating, "Although the content and scale are very different from the Nth Room incident, the fundamental cause is the same," and "It is a collection of gender-discriminatory social structures, misogyny, and perspectives that do not regard women as equal members of society."
The Joint Meeting emphasized, "We will demand the government and the National Assembly to legislate effective bills and enact anti-discrimination laws."
