Park Hyung-joon, co-chairman of the United Future Party's election committee, said to reporters after the committee meeting on the 31st, "Depending on the circumstances of the constituencies and the candidates' decisions, unification efforts are underway in several places," adding, "In some areas, unification between independent candidates and United Future Party candidates is being promoted mainly by civil society groups."
Previously, Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the United Future Party, criticized independent candidates as "acts aiding the Moon administration" and stated, "We will take strong measures, including permanently banning their party membership by amending party rules if necessary." This statement is interpreted as pressure on independent candidates to unify.
Accordingly, unification processes are currently underway in some regions. In Seoul Guro-eul, United Future Party candidate Kim Yong-tae and independent candidate Kang Yo-sik have agreed to hold a unification primary on the 6th and 7th. In Incheon Seo-gu-eul, United Future Party candidate Park Jong-jin and independent candidate Lee Haeng-sook will also hold a unification primary on the same dates.
Additionally, in Seoul Yeongdeungpo-eul, United Future Party candidate Park Yong-chan and former Saenuri Party leader Lee Jung-hyun are in discussions regarding the unification process. In Dangjin, Chungnam, unification is being considered between United Future Party candidate Kim Dong-wan and independent candidate Jeong Seong-jae.
