Second Lieutenant Kim Chan-mi, 3rd Graduating Class of the Department of Military Science
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] A newly commissioned Army officer who graduated from the Department of Military Science at Dongshin University has become a topic of conversation for donating his first salary as a scholarship to the university to support juniors going through difficult times due to COVID-19.
According to Dongshin University (President Choi Il) on the 31st, Second Lieutenant Kim Chanmi (22), who graduated from the Department of Military Science this year and took his first step into society as an Army second lieutenant this month, donated his entire first salary as a scholarship to the department.
Lieutenant Kim, a third graduate of the Dongshin University Department of Military Science, is assigned as a platoon leader of the Mobility Company, 99th Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division of the Army, and is currently receiving initial officer training at the Army Infantry School.
Currently, freshmen of the Dongshin University Department of Military Science are preparing for the officer commissioning exam by receiving intensive education from Monday to Saturday (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) through the department’s group chat, as the university’s semester start was delayed and classes are conducted online due to COVID-19.
The online classes are conducted in a format where professors post questions, and students either answer correctly or discuss to derive the correct answers.
Lieutenant Kim reportedly decided to donate to the department’s scholarship fund after hearing about the passion of his mentors and juniors.
The Dongshin University Department of Military Science plans to distribute the scholarship in a way that benefits as many current students as possible.
Lieutenant Kim said, “I wanted to use my first salary in the most meaningful way,” and added, “Please use it for the dreams and hopes of the juniors in the Dongshin University Department of Military Science who are studying hard despite the impact of COVID-19.”
Ko Jaehwi, head of the Dongshin University Department of Military Science, expressed deep gratitude for Lieutenant Kim’s sincerity in donating the scholarship out of affection for his alma mater, saying, “We will continuously think and strive to help outstanding young people grow into talents who will lead the Republic of Korea Armed Forces with big dreams and hopes like the donor.”
