Major foreign media outlets such as the Associated Press (AP) and the US CNN reported on the 6th (local time) that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has exceeded 100,000. CNN cited data from Johns Hopkins University, stating that as of that morning, the global number of COVID-19 cases had surpassed 100,000. Johns Hopkins University reported that there were 100,330 confirmed cases worldwide and 3,408 deaths.
It has been 66 days since the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the first outbreak case in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, on December 31 of last year, when the number of infections surpassed 100,000.
The AP and others also reported that according to data compiled by health authorities from various countries, the global number of COVID-19 confirmed cases exceeded 100,000 on this day. According to AFP, COVID-19 cases have been reported in 91 countries worldwide. WHO estimates the fatality rate of COVID-19 to be 3.4%.
Among major countries affected by COVID-19, China, identified as the origin, has the highest number of infections at 80,651, with over 3,070 deaths. Switzerland has reported 181 confirmed cases. On this day, the first confirmed cases were reported in Serbia and the Central European country Slovakia. Even Vatican City, known as the headquarters of the global Catholic Church, confirmed one patient at the Vatican hospital.
Iran has a provisional count of 4,747 confirmed cases and 124 deaths. This accounts for 94% of the 5,063 confirmed cases in the Middle East region (excluding Turkey and Pakistan, including Egypt). Additionally, outside Iran in the Middle East, 4 deaths were reported in Iraq, and 74 new confirmed cases were identified in Arab countries such as Bahrain, Iraq, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Israel.
