Gurye-gun Cancels Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Festival Following Sansuyu Flower Festival Cancellation
Full Effort to Block Community Transmission of COVID-19
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 5th that the 16th Gurye Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Festival, scheduled to be held at the end of March, has been completely canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the local community.
The Gurye Spring Flower Race, which was being independently prepared by the social enterprise Jirisanssi Cooperative located in Gurye, was also canceled.
Every spring, about 59km of cherry blossom roads stretch from Seosicheon Riverside to Seomjingang in Gurye. In particular, the Gurye Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Road, which extends from Donghae Village in Muncheok-myeon, around Namdo Bridge in Ganjeon-myeon, to Toji-myeon, was selected as one of the "100 Most Beautiful Roads in Korea." The Gurye Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Festival has been held at the event site near Osan Saseongam entrance in Donghae Village, Muncheok-myeon.
Kim Deuk-woo, the festival promotion committee chairman, said, "Although the festival has been canceled, we expect tourists to visit during the blooming season," and added, "We ask that people who have visited outbreak areas or vulnerable groups such as the elderly refrain from visiting and follow personal hygiene rules such as wearing masks."
Kim Sun-ho, the mayor of Gurye-gun, said, "All festivals in the area have been canceled to prevent the inflow of COVID-19, and we have also requested restraint on private events and religious gatherings," adding, "We are making every effort in quarantine measures, such as distributing masks to each household together with village chiefs."
