Guro-gu Wins Grand Prize at the 7th Multicultural Policy Awards
Efforts Recognized for Stable Community Settlement of Multicultural Families... Positive Reviews for Public-Private-Academic Governance, Supporters Group, and Mentoring System
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) has won the "Grand Prize (Minister of Gender Equality and Family Award)" at the 7th Multicultural Policy Awards.
The "Multicultural Policy Awards" are given to institutions, organizations, and public officials who have contributed to the development of multicultural policies. It is sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
Guro-gu was recognized for its efforts to help multicultural families settle stably in the local community and received the award.
In 2018, Guro-gu established a dedicated department to systematically support and manage multicultural families and foreigners in the region. To provide welfare and administrative services in a one-stop manner, it also opened the Family Integrated Support Center, which brings together the Healthy Family and Multicultural Family Support Center and the community service centers in one place.
In January of this year, a "Tax Consultation Service Center" for multicultural families and foreign residents was opened.
Additionally, a "Multicultural Supporters Group" was created to support marriage immigrant women in adapting to life in Korea, engaging in various activities such as traditional culture experiences, talent donation volunteering, and promoting multicultural-related policies.
To enhance the emotional stability and learning abilities of children from multicultural families, a "University Student Mentoring Program" is also being operated.
To increase residents' understanding of multiculturalism and build consensus, an annual "Multicultural Talk Concert" is held, and a civil-government-academic policy network called "Daga-chi Danuri Governance" has been formed to create a system where people from various sectors can communicate.
Guro-gu, as the chair city of the National Multicultural City Council, is also leading active responses and policy development regarding issues in areas with high concentrations of foreign residents.
Mayor Lee Seong is serving a consecutive term as the 4th chairperson (term: 2018.11.7?2020.11.6), following three previous terms.
