Gwangju City Conducts Citywide Campaign to Hang Taegeukgi Flag in Commemoration of March 1st Movement
Cancellation of Ceremonies and Events to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 27th that it will carry out a citywide campaign to display the Taegeukgi flag in celebration of the 101st anniversary of the March 1st Movement.
Gwangju originally planned to hold the March 1st anniversary ceremony this year at the gymnasium of Gwangju Supia Girls' High School, with about 600 attendees including heads of related organizations, independence activists, and citizens. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the ceremony was scaled down and relocated to the city hall.
However, as the COVID-19 crisis alert level was recently raised from 'Warning' to 'Serious' and the situation worsened, it was decided to cancel the official ceremony. The bell-ringing event for the Bell of Democracy, which was scheduled to follow the ceremony, was also canceled.
Nonetheless, to honor those who sacrificed for independence and to carry forward their spirit, Mayor Lee Yong-seop, Gwangju City Council Chairman Kim Dong-chan, Gwangju Superintendent of Education Jang Hwi-guk, Gwangju Branch Chief of the Liberation Association Kim Gap-je, and Director Ha Yu-seong of the Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office, along with other related veterans organizations, will pay respects at the Gwangju Independence Movement Memorial Tower on March 1st.
In addition, to mark the 101st anniversary of the March 1st Movement, Gwangju will launch a campaign encouraging citizens to display the Taegeukgi flag in every household.
