Yangcheon-gu, Tangible Benefits of 'Smart City Special Zone' Services in Daily Life
Yangcheon-gu Challenges Illegal Parking Zero with 'Disabled Parking Zone Keeper' Service... 'Nearby Smart Electric Vehicle Charging Station' Service to Launch... Promoting Smart City Services such as 'Customized Smart Security Lights' and 'Smart Plugs'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) is piloting the installation and operation of 80 'Disabled Parking Zone Guardians' in public parking lots and large marts within the district as part of the Smart City Special Zone services in daily life.
This is an Internet of Things (IoT) system that installs parking detection sensors, CCTV, and warning lights in disabled-only parking zones. When a non-disabled vehicle enters, it sounds an alarm and flashes warning lights to prevent illegal parking.
Since the pilot operation began at the end of December last year, a review during a certain period this year (January 14?30, 17 days) showed that out of a total of 3,628 parking instances, 1,016 cases (28%) involved non-disabled vehicles receiving warning notifications and exiting. This means 1,016 cases of enforcement effect were achieved without the help of enforcement officers.
The district plans to impose automatic illegal parking fines starting in April after administrative notice in March if non-disabled vehicles ignore warnings and park for more than 5 minutes.
Additionally, through big data analysis, the 'Disabled Parking Zone Guardians' will be expanded to 240 spots in habitual illegal parking areas by 2021, aiming to protect the convenience of disabled persons and prevent administrative resource waste caused by enforcement.
Besides this, the district is promoting ▲ 'Customized Smart Security Lights' for creating safe nighttime streets and ▲ 'Smart Plug' projects to prevent solitary deaths among elderly living alone.
The customized smart security lights have IoT devices installed, which automatically detect malfunctions and notify the responsible department’s control system, enabling faster repairs than before.
Also, depending on seasonal and regional conditions, remote bulk switching on/off is possible.
The smart plug connects to home appliances such as TVs and electric rice cookers in elderly households, monitoring power usage and detecting room brightness. If there is no power usage or brightness change for a certain period, it sends an alarm to a life manager, who then contacts or visits the elderly person to check on their well-being.
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, "With the rapid development of 4th Industrial Revolution technologies such as IoT and AI, smart city services are becoming possible in more and more fields. We will continue to provide services that residents can feel and that are sustainable, building a 'Smart City Yangcheon'."
The district plans to launch a new service this year called 'Nearby Smart Electric Vehicle Charging Station (tentative name)'.
