[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The U.S. Department of State sent a congratulatory message regarding director Bong Joon-ho's film Parasite winning four awards at the Academy Awards.
On the 10th (local time), Morgan Ortagus, spokesperson for the Department of State, tweeted, "We are delighted to see a foreign-language film win Best Picture at the Academy Awards for the first time ever," and added, "Congratulations to the Korean cast and production team of the film Parasite."
Spokesperson Ortagus said, "You fully deserved the four Oscars," and added, "The Korean Wave has definitely arrived."
She retweeted a tweet from Harry Harris, the U.S. Ambassador to Korea. Ambassador Harris had tweeted the previous day, "Parasite and director Bong won four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Director, and for the first time for a foreign-language film, Best Picture," and said, "Congratulations to director Bong, the production team, and everyone involved in the Korean film industry."

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of State announced that Alex Wong, Deputy Special Representative for North Korea, led the U.S. delegation to Seoul on the 10th to continue cooperation on North Korea-related issues, including inter-Korean cooperation and humanitarian matters. Representative Wong stated that at the Korea-U.S. Working Group meeting held in Seoul, they would discuss ongoing Korea-U.S. cooperation to achieve the joint goals of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace. The Korean government reportedly introduced the direction of inter-Korean cooperation projects at the Working Group meeting, including individual tourism to North Korea, railway and road connections, and the demilitarized zone (DMZ) peace zone, and requested cooperation from the U.S. side.
