The Nuclear Safety Ombudsman receives reports on defects in nuclear safety-related equipment and parts, unreasonable work practices, violations of nuclear safety laws, etc., requests investigations from the NSSC, and monitors whether appropriate measures have been implemented.
The ombudsman system was introduced following the 2013 nuclear power plant parts test result forgery incident. Since June 2013, 138 reports have been received and reviewed, and 86 cases have been rewarded with a total of 254 million won in prize money.
Lawyer Lee will serve as a watchdog to prevent corruption and irregularities in the nuclear industry for the next two years. He may be reappointed once. He previously served as Vice Minister of Justice and as Chief Prosecutor of the Daejeon and Suwon High Prosecutors' Offices.
Um Jae-sik, Chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, said, "We expect Lawyer Lee to faithfully perform his role as an ombudsman by communicating with the public through independent and fair duties," and added, "We ask for the public's active reporting to eradicate corruption and irregularities in the nuclear field."
