Seoul City "Improving Housing Conditions for Elderly Living Alone Vulnerable to Heatwaves and Cold Waves"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim On-yu] Seoul City announced on the 10th that it will provide a total of 500 million KRW to improve the housing environment for low-income elderly living alone who are vulnerable to heatwaves and cold waves. The support includes installation and renovation of housing equipment and provision of cooling and heating supplies for those with poor housing conditions.
The improvements include installation and replacement of housing equipment to prepare for extreme heat and cold, support for cooling and heating supplies, installation of insect screens, pest control, gas timer installation, installation of spot and small lights with remote controls, wallpaper and flooring replacement, and replacement of old boilers.
The support targets elderly people who are basic livelihood security recipients or have an income below 60% of the median income. A Seoul City official explained, "The project implementing agencies will identify eligible recipients during home visits to elderly households for customized care services or the visiting community center project (survey of housing-vulnerable households)."

The housing environment improvement project for cold wave preparedness has been underway since last month to prevent safety accidents and enhance convenience. Jeong Jin-woo, Director of Welfare Planning at Seoul City, said, “Improving the housing environment for elderly living alone who are vulnerable to heatwaves and cold waves will enhance the level of elderly housing welfare and increase the perception of welfare benefits,” adding, “Through customized housing environment improvement support, we will promote the elderly’s independent living in the local community.”
