Seongbuk-gu Expands Support for Rent and Housing Renovation for Vulnerable Groups
Improving Resident Housing Welfare through Rent and Home Renovation Support for Vulnerable Groups
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) will significantly expand the eligibility and support amounts for housing benefits this year to stabilize housing and improve housing standards for vulnerable groups facing economic difficulties.
Housing benefits are provided to low-income households with unstable housing regardless of work ability or support obligations. For rental households, monthly rent is paid, and for owner-occupied households, home repairs are supported.
As of 2019, about 7,900 rental households in Seongbuk-gu received monthly rent support totaling 1.4 billion KRW. Additionally, 27 owner-occupied households improved their living environment through home repairs.
This year, the eligibility will be expanded from households earning up to 44% of the median income to those earning up to 45%, and both rental benefits and home repair support amounts will be increased and provided.
For rental benefits, support is provided within the standard rent based on recognized income and household size, with maximum support amounts increased by about 14% compared to the previous year: 266,000 KRW for a single-person household, 302,000 KRW for two-person households, 359,000 KRW for three-person households, and 415,000 KRW for four-person households.
For owner-occupied households, home repairs are supported based on the housing deterioration level, categorized as minor repairs (4.57 million KRW/3-year cycle), medium repairs (8.49 million KRW/5-year cycle), and major repairs (12.41 million KRW/7-year cycle), with support amounts increased by about 20% compared to the previous year.
The district office continues to promote housing benefits by posting information on the website and distributing leaflets to ensure many residents can benefit. Going forward, it plans to actively promote the program by holding briefing sessions in cooperation with related organizations.
Mayor Lee Seung-ro stated, “We will actively work to prevent any blind spots where those in need do not receive housing benefit support. Through this, we hope to improve the housing standards of struggling residents and establish a housing welfare safety net.”
Those facing difficulties and wishing to apply for housing benefits can visit their local community service center or apply online through Bokjiro (bokjiro.go.kr).
