Seongbuk-gu Jangwi Traditional Market Residential Area Linked Urban Regeneration Project Selected
Secured 10 Billion KRW for Traditional Market Revitalization and Residential Area Regeneration by 2023... Nation's First Urban Regeneration Model Linking Traditional Markets and Low-Rise Residential Areas
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) announced that the area around Jangwi Traditional Market in Seongbuk-gu has been selected as a pilot site for a traditional market and residential area-linked urban regeneration project.
Seoul City plans to invest around 10 billion KRW by 2023 to link and combine the declining traditional market and low-rise residential areas, selecting the Jangwi Traditional Market area as a new type of urban regeneration project. This is the first urban regeneration model attempted nationwide.
Since June 2019, Seongbuk-gu has operated an on-site base space (Jangwi Village Communication Room) for about eight months, conducted urban regeneration schools and small-scale urban regeneration projects to strengthen resident capabilities, discovered local agendas, and built governance. As a result of gathering various opinions centered on a resident council composed of traditional market merchants and local residents, the project received excellent evaluations.
This year, the district plans to lay the foundation for the four-year project through the establishment of an urban regeneration activation plan and operation of an urban regeneration support center. Through full-scale promotion in the future, it is expected that not only community-building projects but also various SOC projects will increase residents' convenience.
Mayor Lee Seung-ro stated, “This valuable result was achieved through the combined efforts of residents, administration, and experts. From the first half of 2020, we will actively promote projects reflecting local issues over the next four years.”
