Eunpyeong-gu Supports Built-in Animal Registration System on a First-Come, First-Served Basis to Prevent Pet Abandonment and Loss
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Residents of Eunpyeong-gu can visit designated animal hospitals near their residence (41 locations in Eunpyeong-gu) and pay a registration fee of 10,000 KRW to register their pets using an implanted microchip.
Residents who wish to register their pets with an implanted microchip should bring their ID and visit a participating animal hospital with their companion dog aged 3 months or older (dogs aged 2 months or older since March 21, 2020). By paying 10,000 KRW (market price 40,000 to 80,000 KRW), they can complete the implanted microchip registration.
The implanted microchip registration is conducted through a public-private partnership between Seoul City, the General Insurance Social Contribution Council, and the Seoul Veterinary Medical Association. From March 1 to December, support will be provided for 40,000 companion dogs, and the project will automatically end once the supply is exhausted.
Owners of companion animals aged 3 months or older are required to register their pets. Failure to register may result in a fine of up to 1,000,000 KRW.
An official from Eunpyeong-gu stated, “Implanted microchip registration involves inserting a chip for registration, which eliminates concerns about damage or loss, making it easy to find lost pets. Since support for implanted microchip registration (40,000 animals annually) is limited and may end early once supplies run out, residents who wish to register are encouraged to do so promptly.”
