This Year's Largest-Ever Military Civilian Recruitment
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] The Ministry of National Defense will hire the largest number of military civilian employees (gunmuwon) in history this year. Gunmuwon are national public officials who work alongside soldiers in the military, performing tasks in technical, research reserve force management, or administrative management fields.
According to the recruitment plan on the 30th, there will be 3,120 open recruitment positions, 1,040 experienced hires, and 1,040 fixed-term contract hires. The total number is about 5,200. The detailed numbers for open recruitment and others may change and are expected to be finalized in April. Last year, the Ministry of National Defense hired 4,372 gunmuwon, which is a 392% increase compared to 1,114 in 2018.
The Ministry of National Defense is replacing non-combat military positions with civilian personnel as part of the 'Defense Reform 2.0' initiative. The expansion of gunmuwon recruitment reflects results such as reinforcing personnel focused on field operations, according to the Ministry.
The Ministry plans to separate schedules by recruitment type to select excellent talent and facilitate job seekers' preparation. For positions in remote areas that remain vacant for a long time due to lack of applicants, recruitment will be conducted based on experience without a written exam. The Ministry will announce recruitment notices on the 'Gunmuwon Recruitment' website and others when the recruitment announcement period for each type arrives.
