Seodaemun-gu Receives Government Award for Women-Friendly City (Prime Minister's Commendation)
Received the 'Prime Minister's Commendation' at the '2019 Women-Friendly City Government Awards' Ceremony... Praised for Creating a Safe Environment for Women and Strengthening the Foundation for Socialized Care
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) received the Prime Minister's Commendation at the '2019 Women-Friendly City Government Awards Ceremony' held on the afternoon of the 20th at the Post Tower Grand Conference Room in Jung-gu, Seoul.
Among the entire country, only three local governments were honored with awards that day, and Seodaemun-gu was the only district in Seoul to receive an award. The other two local governments were Suseong-gu, Daegu, which received the Presidential Commendation, and Bucheon City, which received the Prime Minister's Commendation.
Earlier, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family conducted a first document screening and a second on-site inspection targeting 87 women-friendly cities nationwide last month, comprehensively evaluating △ systematic promotion of women-friendly city projects △ creation of a gender-equal and safe city for all residents △ contribution to improving residents' quality of life.
Seodaemun-gu was especially praised for creating a safe environment for women, strengthening the socialization of care, and spreading women-friendly educational culture. Last year, the district pursued various projects under the vision of 'Women-Friendly City Created Together.'
To ensure women's safe return home, the district operated the Women Safety Return Scouts and created a crime-safe village in the Yeonhui-dong one-room housing dense area by △ attaching mirror sheets to entrance doors △ installing 'Dead End' signboards △ installing emergency bell signboards △ special painting on utility poles △ installing night-glowing 'Solar Markers.'
Additionally, they held a gender violence talk concert and inspected public restrooms for illegal filming devices through the operation of Women Safety Guards and Women-Friendly City Supporters.
Reflecting the local characteristics of Seodaemun Independence Park and Seodaemun Prison History Hall, the district created a 'Women-Friendly Theme Path' on the Ansan (鞍山) foothill trail, telling the life stories of female independence activists, and operated on-site tours through resident guides.
Furthermore, they achieved successive results supporting work-family balance, including △ the construction and opening of a Childcare Comprehensive Support Center to systematize childcare support services △ operation of a Joint Childcare Sharing Center and Our Neighborhood Care Center to strengthen after-school care for elementary students △ opening a 3D Convergence Makers Instructor course for women with career interruptions.
Since 2011, the district has held the 'Ewha-Seodaemun Women Leadership Academy' to discover women leaders, and since 2013, it has annually hosted the 'Women-Friendly City Academy' and 'Women Policy Forum' to discover and share women policies.
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, "Taking this award as an opportunity, we will work harder to establish a gender-equal culture in residents' daily lives, and we will make every effort to prepare for the 3rd phase of women-friendly cities through solidifying projects and discovering sustainable women-friendly policies."
Seodaemun-gu was designated as a women-friendly city by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in November 2012 and was re-designated in 2017 in recognition of the achievements over the previous five years.
