On the 16th, Mayor Lee attended the ‘Gwangju Metropolitan City Sports Council Chairman Inauguration and Retirement Ceremony’ held at the multipurpose gymnasium of the Gwangju Sports Council building and stated, “Kim Chang-jun was elected as the new chairman, the first elected chairman of the Gwangju Sports Council,” and “I express my gratitude to candidate Jeon Gap-su and all sportspeople who did their best to ensure a fair and transparent election through healthy competition.”
He continued, “Now that the election is over, I hope the winner will show tolerance and consideration, and the loser will show congratulations and cooperation,” adding, “I expect the sports community to unite and integrate under the new chairman and achieve great development.”
In particular, he emphasized, “My complete neutrality in this sports council chairman election was for the integration of the sports council,” and “Under no circumstances should the Gwangju sports community be divided due to this election.”
The mayor said, “Gwangju City will actively support the sports council for the development of Gwangju sports but will not interfere unnecessarily,” and “I hope the sports community will independently break free from political dependency and show a mature image that opens a new future for Gwangju sports.”
Furthermore, he explained, “Since the integrated launch of professional and grassroots sports, the Gwangju Sports Council has devoted itself to harmony and stability above all, prepared concrete innovation plans for the future of Gwangju sports, and established a transparent and fair sports administration system,” adding, “As a result, meaningful achievements were made such as the successful hosting of the Gwangju World Swimming Championships, the highest-ever record at the 100th National Sports Festival’s away games, the most medals ever won at the 39th National Para Games, and the promotion of the Gwangju professional football team (FC) to the first division league.”
He added, “Based on these valuable experiences and assets, Gwangju City will continue to move forward this year to realize Gwangju as a sports city and a healthy city,” and “I hope the Gwangju Sports Council will unite more tightly under the new chairman Kim Chang-jun, pool its capabilities, and achieve a second leap through change and innovation based on a new vision.”
