LG Electronics plans to secure next-generation robot technology by researching object manipulation technology with the research personnel of the MIT Biomimetic Robotics Lab.
LG Electronics expects significant synergy through collaboration between its own emotional recognition and navigation technologies and Professor Kim's expertise in quadruped locomotion and object manipulation technologies.
Professor Kim gained worldwide attention in 2006 by inventing the 'Stickybot,' a robot that climbs walls like a lizard. The Stickybot was also selected as one of the best inventions of the year by Time magazine in the same year. Since 2012, Professor Kim has been leading the MIT Biomimetic Robotics Lab.
LG Electronics and Professor Kim completed the selection of research projects at the end of last year and will begin full-scale collaboration starting this month. They will conduct joint research at the Robot Advanced Research Institute under LG Electronics' CTO.
Additionally, LG Electronics will establish the 'LG Boston Robotics Lab' in Boston, USA. The company explained that Boston is a region where many robot-related companies and startups are concentrated and where technological research is active, allowing them to closely observe the rapidly changing robotics industry. LG Electronics believes that securing a future robotics technology base in Boston will enable long-term collaboration with Professor Kim in joint research.
Professor Kim said, "I am pleased to work with LG Electronics, which has led the global home appliance industry," and added, "We will work together with LG Electronics to develop future robots that will improve our lives."
