Samsung Electronics Ranked 2nd in US Patents Acquired Last Year, LG Electronics 6th
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Electronics was found to be the company that acquired the second highest number of patents in the United States last year.
According to IFI Claims, a U.S. patent information company, the total number of patents registered in the U.S. last year was 333,530.
By company, U.S. IBM, which has held the top spot for 27 consecutive years (9,262 patents), was followed by Samsung Electronics (6,471 patents) in second place. Samsung has held the second position for 14 years since 2006.
Canon ranked third (3,548 patents), Microsoft fourth (3,081 patents), and Intel fifth (3,020 patents).
LG Electronics acquired 2,805 patents, ranking sixth. Following were Apple (7th), Ford (8th), Amazon (9th), and Huawei (10th).
Hyundai Motor Company ranked 20th overall (1,505 patents), and Kia Motors ranked 41st (921 patents).
By country, among the top 50 companies, the share of patents acquired was 49% for the U.S., 16% for Japan, and 7% for Korea.

Additionally, when counting the number of active patent families, Samsung Electronics held the top spot with 76,638. A patent family refers to patents registered in two or more countries.
