Hwasun-gun Completes Restoration Project of Late Lawyer Hong Namsun's Birthplace
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Young-gyun] Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gu Chung-gon) announced on the 10th that it has completed the restoration project of the birthplace of the late lawyer Hong Nam-soon, known as the "godfather of the human rights movement," in December last year.
The restoration project of the late lawyer Hong Nam-soon's birthplace was carried out with a total budget of 260 million won, restoring the wooden thatched-roof house to its original form as much as possible.
The county built two buildings totaling 84㎡, including the main house and the gatehouse, on the site of Hong's birthplace in Hyosan-ri, Dogok-myeon, and also refurbished the yard and fence.
Born in 1912 in Hyosan-ri, Dogok-myeon, the late lawyer Hong Nam-soon was a first-generation democratization activist who devoted his life as a human rights lawyer and was a "righteous man of the era" who dedicated himself to the democratization movement.
In 1963, he opened a law office in Gung-dong, Seoul, and took on the defense of conscience prisoners, earning the nickname "special lawyer for emergency measures."
He also served as the president of the Gwangju May 18th Detainees Association, chairman of the May 18th Gwangju People's Revolution Memorial Project, and chairman of the committee for the construction of the memorial tower, leading efforts to uncover the truth and restore the honor of the May 18th democratization movement.
The county plans to use the restored birthplace of Hong as a space to honor and learn about the spirit of democracy and human rights.
