Gwangju City Establishes 'Clean Road System' for Road Cleaning Using Groundwater
From Munhwa Jeondang to Geumnamno 4-ga Station, and from Geungnakgyo to Gwangju Songjeong Station, 2 locations
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 10th that it has completed two sections of the 'Clean Road System Construction Project' on the 0.52 km section from Culture Hall to Geumnamno 4-ga Station in Dong-gu, Geumnamno, and the 3.5 km section from Geungnakgyo to Gwangju Songjeong Station on Sangmu-daero in Gwangsan-gu.
The Clean Road System washes the road by spraying discharged groundwater through spray nozzles installed on the road median divider.
In particular, the Geungnakgyo to Gwangju Songjeong Station section is the longest single section with Clean Road installation nationwide.
For driver safety, the city installed an electronic display board at the starting point of the section to guide the operation of the Clean Road System, and installed weather observation equipment to monitor temperature, humidity, and fine dust for flexible operation through automatic control.
The Clean Road System is scheduled to operate from May to prepare for the heatwave. The discharged groundwater sprayed on the road is expected to lower the road surface temperature during heatwave warnings and wash away road dust generated by vehicle operation, thereby improving air quality.
Meanwhile, to reduce urban heatwaves and for citizen convenience, the city also installed a Cooling Fog System on the 350m section from Culture Hall to Geumnamno Park, which uses harmless tap water to spray fine water particles at high pressure, lowering the surrounding temperature by about 10℃.
The Cooling Fog System is also equipped with LED lighting in the form of street lamps, providing visual enjoyment for citizens even at night.

Oh Gyu-hwan, head of the city's General Construction Headquarters, said, “The Clean Road is expected to be effective in reducing fine dust by washing away road dust and alleviating the heat island effect by lowering road heat,” and added, “We ask for cooperation in pedestrian and vehicle safety during Clean Road operation due to groundwater spraying.”
