Naju City, Honam's First 'Ordinance on Naju Studies Research and Promotion' Promulgated
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) announced on the 9th that it promulgated the 'Ordinance on Naju Studies Research and Promotion' on the 8th, establishing the first legal basis among basic local governments in the Honam region for the research and development of regional studies.
Regional studies refer to the comprehensive and systematic study of a region's natural, historical, and cultural assets, aiming to establish regional identity, enhance autonomy capabilities, and prepare sustainable development plans. This has mainly been promoted at the metropolitan level.
However, with the advent of national balanced development and local decentralization in response to overcoming the crisis of local cities caused by population decline, aging, and economic recession, regional studies have recently emerged as a sustainable development strategy and are spreading to basic local governments.
In line with this trend, the city has promoted "Naju Studies Research to systematically organize the history of Naju" as a pledge during the 7th local government administration and has made multifaceted efforts for Naju Studies research.
Since establishing the basic plan in 2018, the city has conducted policy forums, academic conferences, research projects, and collection of heritage records. Through the enactment of the ordinance related to Naju Studies research this time, it has laid a legal foundation to revitalize regional studies research.
This year, the city launched the 'Naju Studies Promotion Committee' for systematic research of Naju Studies and will focus on raising local residents' interest, participation, and consensus through research projects, academic studies, policy forums, and citizen academies.
In particular, starting this month, the city plans to assign specialized personnel for the collection and research of artifacts, which are the basic assets of regional studies research, and will actively build an archive of records and memories related to Naju's history.
