[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Sung-yeol] A man in his 50s who hit an elderly man with a passenger car while returning home and fled the scene was urgently arrested by the police.
The Anseong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 8th that they have apprehended and are investigating a religious figure, A (59), on charges of hit-and-run causing death under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
According to the police, A is suspected of hitting an elderly man B in his 80s with a passenger car on a one-lane road in Anseong City, Gyeonggi Province, at around 5:45 p.m. the previous day (7th), and fleeing the scene, resulting in B's death.
It was investigated that B was walking along the edge of the road to go home after leaving the senior center he usually attended when he was hit by A's passenger car and fell into a rice paddy embankment beside the road.
When the grandmother's return home was about an hour later than usual, her family searched mainly around the senior center and the house and eventually found her in the rice paddy embankment.
Immediately after the incident, the police secured CCTV footage from the scene, identified A's vehicle number, and after tracking, arrested him in downtown Anseong in the afternoon of the 8th.
